MCom Economics (Course work)

The MCom Economics (Course work) focuses on Research methodology, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and a mini-dissertation, as well as International trade, International finance, Monetary economics and banking,  Econometrics, Economic development and Public finance.

Research Methodology 801 (EBW 801) is a prerequisite for the mini-dissertation. The module does not carry any credits.

Any other module at either the honours or master’s level approved by the Head of Department can constitute an elective.

Candidates who consider pursuing a doctoral degree are advised to complete the MPhil programme in Economics.

A minimum number of at least five candidates are required to register before a module is presented. The Department furthermore reserves the right not to present a module if the particular expertise is not available in the Department in that year.

Each candidate is only allowed to register twice for a particular module. All candidates following the master’s programme must pass Macroeconomics 813 and Microeconomics 812 in the first year of registration and perform satisfactorily in all other registered modules in order to continue with the degree.

Prerequisites for admission to the degree:

A maximum of 30 students can gain admittance into all of the master's programmes in the Department of Economics. Of all those programme positions, a minimum of eight of those accepted will include students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. Otherwise, acceptance onto the MCom Econometrics programme is determined by the following criteria.

1. Completion of a BComHons degree that includes:
· a minimum of three years of Statistics or Econometrics,
· Mathematical Economics,
· Calculus-based Microeconomics, and
· Calculus-based Macroeconomics.

2. A 65% average in:
· Econometrics,
· Mathematical Economics,
· Calculus-based Microeconomics, and
· Calculus-based Macroeconomics.

3. Students without a 65% average in the above subjects will be ordered according to their average. University of Pretoria students will receive an additional one point on their average, when being ranked. Remaining places, up to the maximum, will be filled from the top; however, averages below 60% will not be considered.

All master’s candidates must attend the Department’s orientation and welcome programme, which orientates candidates with respect to the requirements and demands of the postgraduate programme, and deals with critical administrative and academic requirements necessary to succeed in the postgraduate programme.

1. The master’s degree is conferred on a candidate only if at least one year has expired after the qualifications by virtue of which admission to master’s study has been obtained – with the proviso that the candidate is registered for at least twelve months for a master’s degree at this University, although the Dean may approve a shorter period.
2.  The degree programme must be completed within four years after the first registration for that degree. The Dean may, however, at the recommendation of the Head of Department concerned, grant a limited extension to this period.
3.  The Dean may, at the recommendation of the Postgraduate Committee, cancel the registration of a student during any academic year if his/her academic progress is not satisfactory.
